A man who said he had caused damage to vehicles and asked to go to jail Sunday eventually got his wish, police said.
Carlos Olivas, 24, address unknown, called police around 12:15 p.m. from a Taco Bell in Cedar Rapids and said he wanted to go to jail. He claimed he had keyed two vehicles, but when he went to show officers the damage, the vehicles were gone.
Police let him go, but were back out with him again around 5 p.m., when he again requested to go to jail. He again couldn't provide any proof, and was not arrested, police said.
Around 5:30 p.m., police got a third call from Olivas, who again wanted to turn himself in for damage to a vehicle. This time police found the vehicle. According to the police report, Olivas had thrown a cement block at the vehicle, owned by David Bekicka, 38, of Fairfax, causing about $1,500 in damage.
Olivas was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal mischief. He told officers he did the damage so police would take him to jail, because he had no place to stay.
As of Tuesday morning, Olivas was still at the Linn County Jail with a bond of $5,000.
