Donald Schmidt, 69, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2017, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a battle with Parkinson's disease. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, at Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa, where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Casual attire is requested at the service. Interment will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. The Rev. Marty Schuhmacher will officiate at the services. Thoughts, memories and condolences may be left at www.goettschonline.com.
Survivors include his wife, Leann; a daughter, Kyleigh, all of Anamosa; a son, Stan Schmidt, Cedar Rapids; and his stepfather, Melvin Nealsen, Burbank, S.D.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Michael.
Donald Paul Schmidt was born April 2, 1948, at John McDonald Hospital, Monticello, Iowa. He was the son of Lavern and Doris Eggers Schmidt. Don was raised by his uncle Roger Eggers. He graduated from high school in New York state. Don returned to the Monticello and Anamosa communities, where he was employed at the Iowa Men's Reformatory for 33 years. He retired in 2003. Don then worked as a store greeter at Walmart for five years. Don was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.
