Boys
Cedar Rapids Kennedy 56, 3A No. 10 Cedar Rapids Xavier 46
Xavier (3-3, 1-3 MVC) used a 13-0 burst to claim an 18-9 lead early in the second quarter, but Tyler Andrews scored 15 points during a 24-6 Kennedy explosion that gave the Cougars a 33-24 halftime lead. Andrews capped the burst with a 3-point heave from well beyond the half-court stripe that beat the halftime horn.
'It felt good, it looked good, so it went in,' Andrews said.
Andrews now averages 18.2 points per game this season for Kennedy (3-2, 2-2).
3A No. 2 Maquoketa 40, 3A No. 3 West Delaware 35
If the Maquoketa Cardinals are able to win their game Friday night, they will go into the holiday break with nine wins. Or as many as they had all last season.
That's pretty good.
Class 3A's second-ranked team has been more than pretty good the first month-plus of the boys' basketball season. They slugged out a 40-35 win Tuesday night over No. 3 West Delaware in a game that wasn't necessarily state tournament quality, though definitely state tournament intense.
4A No. 5 Iowa City West 68, Cedar Rapids Washington 67
Patrick McCaffery set an Iowa City West record by scoring 42 points as the Trojans sneaked past Cedar Rapids Washington at West High.
McCaffery broke the record of 39 points shared by Brynjar Olafsson (1992-93) and Glen Worley (1999-2000).
Iowa City West led 35-25 at halftime and held on during a bumpy second half. Marcus Morgan added 12 points for the Trojans.
Jamar Thurman had 16 points to lead a balanced Washington attack. Mick McCurry and Brayden Wright each added 15 points, and Imanuel Rowland had 13 points.
4A No. 8 Cedar Rapids Prairie 67, Iowa City Liberty 43
Prairie pulled away in the final quarter, 23-11, Tuesday night in North Liberty.
Keegan Murray had 26 points and Kris Murray added 19 points to pace the Hawks.
Linn-Mar 73, Western Dubuque 41
Trey Hutcheson had 16 points and eight rebounds to lead the Lions in Marion.
Greg Hall scored 15 points and Jaren Nelson added 10 points for Linn-Mar.
