Former Iowa Hawkeye football players/trainers offer organized show of support to current Iowa program
Mike Hlas Feb. 4, 2011 11:14 am
I did not know there was an "Iowa Football Club." There is, and it wants to be heard. Several of the people involved with it have been good to me over the years as source material and strike me as good guys, so I have no hesitation in reprinting their press release. Here it is:
Iowa Football Club Announces Unequivocal Support for Coach Kirk Ferentz and The University of Iowa Football Program
IOWA CITY, Iowa – February 4, 2011 –
The Iowa Football Club, an independent non-profit organization comprised of more than 400 former Iowa football players, trainers, managers and coaches, would like to state our steadfast unwavering support for Kirk Ferentz, his coaches, players and staff in light of the events involving several players who were recently hospitalized.
Our first thought is for the well-being of those players affected. In lieu of knowing any of the true facts of this event, we want to caution the unsubstantiated speculation regarding the methods and practices of this program's off season training regimen. We want to remind you of the impeccable record these coaches, Chris Doyle and his strength and conditioning staff and our Iowa Football program has in terms of development of its young men and the long history of producing a consistent winning and nationally competitive program.
Coach Ferentz and his staff have shown time and time again that the reputation of the University of Iowa and its Football Program are of the utmost importance and their unwillingness to sacrifice the long term well being of its members for the short term results on the field. Like everyone, we anxiously await the findings of this recent, unfortunate event. As brothers in the Iowa Football Family, we wish all the student-athletes involved a speedy recovery and their ability to return to the game and program they love.
We are confident that when all of the facts are presented, the intentions and integrity of Coach Ferentz, Coach Doyle and the entire Iowa football staff will be found clear of any intentional wrongdoing and their commitment to the University of Iowa, the Iowa Football Program and to the student-athletes on the team, current and past, will be validated. Our strong commitment and support comes from our great confidence in Coach Ferentz, his coaches, his staff and their 12 year track record of running a first class football program.
Always a Hawk!
