Johnson, Virgil L.
Virgil L. Johnson, 70, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha after an extended illness. A graveside service, with military honors, will be held in the Palo Cemetery on Thursday, Sept. 8, at 10 a.m. A visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Karon Johnson; a daughter-in-law, Suzie Johnson, and her children and grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his son, Troy Johnson; and parents, Harold and Marie Johnson.
Virgil was born April 6, 1941, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Harold and Marie (Caroll) Johnson. He married Karon Marie Johnson on April 19, 1964, in Cedar Rapids. Virgil was a United States Army veteran of Vietnam. He was a long time firefighter for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department and a funeral directors' assistant at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. He was a member of Hanford American Legion Post 5.
