CEDAR RAPIDS - Police on Friday were continuing to investigate a double shooting that happened around 7:50 p.m. Thursday near the corner of C Street and Rapids Avenue SW.
According to Cedar Rapids police Sgt. Cristy Hamblin, two 20-year-old men were shot in the legs and lower torso area and are expected to survive. She said both victims were being treated at Mercy Medical Center but their names have not been released.
Hamblin said five to eight shots were fired at the men, who had been walking on C Street SW. Neighbors said after the shooting, three suspects, believed to be men, ran northeast through Stejskal Park toward the woods.
No arrests had been made in the case as of Friday morning, police said. Investigators have not speculated about a possible motive.
At least one bullet hit the house at 2146 C St. SW, but no one else was injured.
Streets surrounding the three-way intersection were blocked off for more than two hours, as officers combed the park and the nearby wooded area with flashlights and metal detectors. Police dogs also helped search the area.
One resident who has lived in the area for 20 years said violence is uncharacteristic for the neighborhood.
“It's a good neighborhood,” said Bill Stewart, 67. “Everybody knows everybody and looks out for everybody.”
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Linn County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-CS-CRIME (272-7463) or text to CRIMES (274637), with 5227 in the subject or message area, along with the tip.
