Shonn Greene, the New York Jets' starting running back job is yours
Mike Hlas Mar. 1, 2010 10:39 pm
It's no shock after the sensational performances Shonn Greene gave in the playoffs, but former Iowa Hawkeye Greene is about to become the main running back for the New York Jets in his second pro season.
The Jets are going to release incumbent starting running back Thomas Jones this week. Jones was no slouch at age 31 in the 2009 season, rushing for 1,402 yards.
But Greene topped 100 rushing yards in both of the Jets' playoff wins. The ball is now his.
Meanwhile, some of Greene's former Iowa teammates have been at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Agent Jack Bechta, who has represented several ex-Hawks over the years, had this to say on Twitter Monday:
Nice day at the combine for the iowa linebackers Edds and Angerer. Edds ran a little better than scouts expected so should help his stock.
Added Universal Draft:
Very good 4.62 for AJ Edds who we love inside or out as a 3 down linebacker for the Dolphins. This kid can really play
Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star has this story about Edds, who is from Indiana. Excerpts:
"A lot of guys get hung up on how much they weigh, how fast they are,'' Edds said. "At the end of the day, it's important that you're a coachable guy that can play and go out there and do what the coaches ask you to do and not just show off and talk about it.
"You've got to be a guy who works your (butt) off.''
NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock believes there's a place in the NFL for Edds.
"He's a draftable kid that because of his play on special teams should find a home in the NFL,'' he said.
