Shimek, Jimmy F.

Jimmy F. Shimek, 70, of Robins, formerly of Marshalltown, died Friday, May 13, 2011, at his home. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by Chaplain Tammy Buseman. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Graveside services: 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Long Grove Cemetery in Maynard.

Survivors include his sister, Mary (Dan) Stubbe of Marshalltown; and his nieces, Penny Ernst of Marshalltown and Diane Stubbe of Ankeny. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Thomas (Judy) Erickson of Independence, Harry (Diane) Erickson of Elkader and Edwin (Lois) Erickson Jr. of Maynard; sisters-in-law, Carolyn (Roger) Frederick of Marion, Charlene (Robert) Fairchild of Des Moines, Cleo Erickson of St. James, Minn., and Jett Larson of Decorah; his godchild, Diane Stubbe; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents; his very special grandmother, Lydia Brand, whom Jimmy lived with for many years; and his wife, Mary.

Jimmy was born the son of Frank and Ruth (Brand) Shimek on Feb. 3, 1941, in Marshalltown. Jimmy attended school in Marshalltown, went into the Army National Guard, and was honorably discharged in 1963. On April 30, 1967, in Maynard, Iowa, Jimmy was united in marriage to Mary C. Erickson. They made their home in Marion before moving to Robins. Mary passed away in 2003 of cancer.

Jimmy worked selling shoes for several years in Marshalltown at Kinney's Shoe Store, and then moved to Cedar Rapids, working at the Country Cobbler shoe store and also Kinney Shoes. Jimmy worked at Harnischfeger in Cedar Rapids for about 15 years until they moved out of Cedar Rapids.

Jimmy loved buying fancy vehicles and was especially proud of his Corvettes and his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He loved to make deals and laughed about it. He also enjoyed visiting with all of his friends who would stop by his Morton building and the house for a Pepsi or coffee. Jimmy loved the new bridge in Robins and got to cut the ribbon on the bridge for the opening and was so proud of it. He also enjoyed his many walks and scooter rides with his friend, Bev.

A special thank you to all of Jimmy's special friends who stopped by to visit with him through this lengthy illness with cancer.
