Ruth Helen Johnson, 58, of Spokane, Wash., passed away peacefully at home on June 2, 2016, with her husband, daughter and son by her side after a courageous battle with cancer.

Ruth was born in Dubuque, Iowa, on July 8, 1957, to John and Dorothy (Billmeyer) Siegel of Greeley. She graduated from West Delaware High School, Manchester, in 1975 and the University of Northern Iowa in 1979.

She married James Johnson in Iowa City on March 26, 1988. She moved with her family to Spokane, Wash., in 1992. Ruth had a long career as a medical technologist.

Ruth had a very kind heart and was an avid volunteer. She loved her family and enjoyed the family cabin on the Pend Oreille River. Ruth also enjoyed the many vacations with her family to many destinations throughout the world.

What will be missed most is her beautiful smile that she always had that brought happiness to all who met her every day.

She is survived by her husband of 28 years, James Johnson; son, Gregory, at home; daughter, Kristen (Colten) Russell of Puyallup, Wash.; one sister, Mary K. Siegel of Spokane; four brothers, David (Jane) Siegel of Cedar Rapids, James (Janet) Siegel of Des Moines, Mark (Rachel) Siegel of Urbandale and John (Kelly) Siegel of Howard Grove, Wis.; brother-in-law, Larry (Tammy McLaskey) Maurer of Iowa City; along with many nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Ann Maurer; aunt and uncle, Mary and Gene Rieger of Indiana; and her in-laws, Gene and Rita Johnson of Wisconsin.

In lieu of flowers, Ruth expressed any memorial donations be made to Troop 171 in Spokane. Donations may be sent to the family at 10514 N. Arrowhead Rd., Spokane, WA 99208.
