Wamac tourney finals highlight Tuesday slate

For some, the regular season reaches a conclusion. Even a climax.

For others, the postseason beckons.

Tuesday is a potpourri of volleyball importance throughout the area. The Mississippi Valley Conference schedule concludes with a full slate of cross-divisional matches, and regionals begin in classes 1A and 2A.

Oh, and many of the area's top teams congregate in Mount Vernon for the final day of the Wamac Conference tournament.

Wamac action begins with quarterfinals at 4 p.m., with semifinals scheduled for 6:30 and the championship at 7:15.

The championship bracket of the Wamac tournament is a shark tank. Seven of the eight teams are rated.

'What a neat thing it is to have so many great teams in our conference,” Marion Coach Roxanne Paulsen said. 'Whoever comes out of this tournament will have to earn it. It won't be a cakewalk for anybody.”

A minor pool-play upset created an intriguing quarterfinal: Class 4A second-ranked West Delaware (38-2) faces 3A No. 1 Mount Vernon (27-6) at 5 p.m. The Mustangs were beaten by 3A No. 6 Independence (30-6) in Thursday's preliminary round.

Indee faces Williamsburg (13-17) in the other top-bracket quarterfinal, at 4 p.m. In the bottom half, 3A No. 2 Solon (25-7) plays 3A No. 15 Center Point-Urbana (22-12) at 4 p.m., and 4A No. 3 Marion (30-5) meets 4A No. 5 Clear Creek Amana (23-8) at 5.

Marion libero Abby Phillips is out at least 2 weeks with a broken hand. Phillips has committed to play at Iowa State.

Solon has won three straight Wamac tournament crowns.

The regional road begins Tuesday with 1A and 2A first-rounders. The only area ranked team to open is 1A 15th-rated Iowa Valley, which hosts Belle Plaine. The others have first-round byes and begin play next week.

Regionals begin next Monday in 5A, 4A and 3A.
