LESTER "LES" R. YOUNG

Lester "Les" R. Young, 83, of Cedar Rapids, died Nov. 26, 2016, at ManorCare Health Services surrounded by his family.
Les was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1933 to Roy and Dorothy (Hedlund) Young. Due to the death of his mother when Les was 5 years old, he lived with various extended family members. At the age of 9, he was placed at the Quakerdale Home, where he resided until being reunited with his grandmother and father.
Les served from 1950 to 1953 in the U.S. Army. Upon his discharge from the service. he started working at Western Electric (AT&T) and retired as a supervisor after 38 years of service. He was an avid reader, enjoyed playing pool and his "Paradise" cabin on the Wapsi, where he thoroughly enjoyed entertaining his many grandchildren. He was united in marriage to Beverly Berry at the Shueyville Methodist Church in Shueyville, Iowa, on Oct. 13, 1991. They recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife; his sons, Pat (Patricia Gallagher), Dan (Julie) and Mike (Ellen) Young; Bev's children, Mark (Polly) Bornstein, Craig (Nancy) Bornstein and Gina (Bob) Johnson; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Regardless of your circumstance, father, grandfather, etc., Les was a friend to all.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Dorothy.
A visitation will be held on Nov. 30 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel Stateroom.
The family would like to offer their sincere and special thanks to St. Luke's and ManorCare Health Services staff for their exceptional care and service.
Memorials may be made to the Cedar Rapids Public Library, local food banks or any other of the multitude of charities dear to Les' heart.
