Richard Sheldon, 82, died Thursday, June 21, 2018, at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minn. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 27, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton, with the Rev. Jessica Crane-Munoz officiating. Interment will be in Urbana Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Parkinson's Foundation. Phillips Funeral Home, Vinton, is in charge of arrangements.
Richard was born Feb. 25, 1936, to Cecil and Eva (Gruman) Sheldon in Lamont, Iowa. He attended school in Lamont and graduated from Lamont High School in 1953. After working around Lamont a few years, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in February 1958. While in the Air Force, he spent a year and a half in Taiwan and the remainder at Keesler AFB in Mississippi. After leaving the Air Force in February 1962, he entered Iowa State University in the fall of 1962. He received his BSEE degree from ISU in the spring of 1967.
He married Patricia Glime on June 10, 1967. He worked as an electrical engineer for various companies in the Midwest until he retired in August of 2001.
Richard is survived by his children and grandchildren, Steve (Tanya) Sheldon of Chanhassen, Minn., and their children, Alexander and Maia Sheldon; son, Neil (Amy) Sheldon of Mount Calvary, Minn., and their children, Amanda and Nathan Sheldon; his brother, Kenneth (Carol) Sheldon of Cedar Rapids; and his sister, Elaine Akerly of Marion.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Patricia.
