Richard "Dick" Duane Nunemaker, 88, of Hiawatha, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital. Celebration of Life services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW, with the Rev. Samuel Dronebarger of Lafayette Christian Church presiding. Burial will follow in Lafayette Cemetery, near Alburnett, where full military rites will be conducted. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel.
Richard was born Jan. 17, 1926, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Francis and Agnes (Duffy) Nunemaker. He served in the United States Army during World War II, in the Pacific Theatre. Following his military service, he worked at Iowa Manufacturing, until joining his father's construction company. He married Evelyn Weeks on Jan. 24, 1953.
Dick was involved in the construction business for many years, working for Rinderknecht and later went on his own as a homebuilder for Nunemaker Construction. He enjoyed watching Western movies, Lawrence Welk, water skiing, boating, building projects and the time spent with his family. Dick was an active member of the Lafayette Christian Church and the VFW Post 788.
Dick is survived by his wife, Evelyn; children, Penny (Steve) Gaskill of Brooklyn, N.Y., Shirley (Joseph) Jensen of Walker, Diane (Dennis) Clinton of Center Point, Nancy (Maynard) Booher-Ormiston of Cedar Rapids and Allan (Johnna) Nunemaker of Rowley; 12 grandchildren, Justine Omar, Heath (Sarah) Omar, April (Chris) Steuhm, Anthony, Morgan and Tanner Clinton, Kayla, Braydon and Landon Nunemaker, Colton Stoddard and Andrea and Eric Ormiston; six great-grandchildren, Alexus, Abby, Mackanzie, Austin, Bryson and Colton; and sisters-in-law, Jane Nunemaker and Alice Nunemaker, both of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Bill, Frank,
Ted and Bruce Nunemaker; and his sister, Eileen Whitmore.
Family was very important to him and he was a great husband, dad and grandpa. He will be greatly missed.
