Ernest John Eickelberg Jr., 88, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at Mercy Medical Center's Hallagan Education Center. Following the memorial, there will be an informal gathering (no host) at the Metro Buffet, 448 33rd Ave. SW. Burial: Oakland Cemetery, 1000 Brown St., Iowa City. Ernest donated his body to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program for medical research. After the university is done with research (12 to 18 months), there will be a ceremony and burial, with a memorial plaque.
Survivors include his wife, Charmaine Eickelberg; daughter, Anne Eickelberg; and a brother, James Eickelberg.
Ernest served twice in the Marines and had careers in the plumbing, construction and property management fields. He was an accomplished carpenter, fisherman and cook. He loved the outdoors.
Ernest had a strong, unique personality; he was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Think of him when you go fishing or walking in the woods.
