VIRGINIA A. SLEEPER
Independence
Virginia A. Sleeper, 79, of Independence, Iowa, died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018, in Independence.
She was born July 28, 1938, in Independence, daughter of John T. "Ted" and Lois A. (Anderson) Smith. She attended country school in Otterville, Iowa, and was a 1956 graduate of Jesup High School, Jesup, Iowa. She married George Sleeper in October of 1961 at the First United Methodist Church in Independence. Virginia worked in the Buchanan County Assessor's Office for
47 years and was the president of the Iowa State Assessor's Association for a year. She was an active member of the VFW Auxiliary, United Methodist Church Women, Rotary Club and the Eagles Club in Guttenberg, Iowa.
Virginia enjoyed being active and was in a bowling league for 44 years in Independence. She also liked to grow flowers and work in her yard. But most of all, she loved to spend time with her family and friends.
She is survived by a daughter, Debbie (Gene) Ehlers, Independence; her grandchildren, Kari (Nick) Fredrich, Downers Grove, Ill., and Kurt (Jennifer) Ehlers, Independence; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Karen (Jim) Connell, Independence, and Diane (John) Kurtz, Independence; two brothers, Jerald (Dixie) Smith, Waterloo, Iowa, and Clifford (Pam) Smith, Burlingame, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George Sleeper; and a sister, Mary Deke.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church in Independence, with the Rev. Scott Meador officiating. Burial will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, and from 9 a.m. to services Monday at the church.
