School cuts negatively affects everyone

It's unfortunate to hear of more budget cuts to the school system, especially when it's done in the manner Iowa City is doing it. To start with, the threat that all classes, regardless of being a core class or elective, extracurricular activity or other programming, are potentially being cut is upsetting to say the least.
Besides giving teachers and staff the opportunity to retire early or resign, teachers are being left out of this discussion and decision making when they should be a vital asset in identifying the needs and possibly less necessary programming through the school.
Cutting back in schools negatively affects everyone. Students are missing out on educational opportunities or having a less than ideal classroom setting; teachers, support staff, and administrators will be losing their employment; and parents will be left to figure out how to fill the gaps in their children's educational and extracurricular deficits.
How can we be OK with making educational cuts without the input of the important players - teachers, parents and students?
We need to advocate on behalf of these children, families, educators and staff to ensure that Iowa City does not make major changes without appropriate and adequate information and contribution.
