OWA CITY – A Coralville man is accused of stealing about $50,000 worth of items, mostly jewelry, from an Iowa City home last May.
Wally Patheuangsin, 19, of 2501 Holiday Rd., was arrested Thursday on charges of aiding and abetting first-degree theft and third-degree burglary, both felonies.
A judge released him from jail Friday morning but placed him under the supervision of the Department of Corrections.
Patheuangsin is accused with two other people of entering a residence on Langenberg Avenue in southeast Iowa City on the night of May 8. They knew the alleged victim and his family was out of town, according to an Iowa City police criminal complaint, and stole numerous items, including clothes, shoes, alcohol, money and electronics, but primarily jewelry. The total amount of property taken is estimated at $50,000.
An informant told police that Patheuangsin and two other people were responsible for the burglary, according to the criminal complaint. Patheuangsin admitted to his and the co-defendants' involvement and provided specific details about how they carried it out, according to the complaint.
Iowa City police Sgt. Denise Brotherton said arrest warrants are out for the other two people and she had no additional information on them or other aspects of the crime.
First-degree theft is a class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Third-degree burglary is a class D felony with a maximum of five years in prison and a $7,500 fine.
