The cookbook "Czech and Slovak Heritage ... Family Stories ... Traditions & Recipes," published by the Museum Guild of the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library, is the Midwest regional winner for the 2008 McIlhenny Co. TABASCO Community Cookbook Awards.
The prize includes $500 donation designated for flood renewal of the Museum & Library, a distinctive dinner plate plaque personalized for the organization and award gold stickers to place on the cookbook cover.
The cookbooks cost $25 and are available for purchase from any Guild member, at the NCSML office in Lindale Mall, (319) 294-5354, or at the event "Babi's Kitchen" from 10 a.m. to noon March 28 at St. Ludmila's Church social hall, 211 21st Ave. SW.
The Gazette published a story on the cookbook two years ago when it was first pubished. Here is the recipe for rosky (the cookie is pronounced ROOSH-key) that was published with that story.
Mix flour, vanilla, butter, cream cheese and sugar until well-blended. Roll out dough on a floured surface. Fold over three times and re-roll. Shape dough into rolls that are about 3 inches in diameter and 10 inches long. Wrap each roll in waxed paper and place in the refrigerator overnight.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Remove half a roll at a time and place it on a floured surface. Roll the dough to about 1/8-to-1/4-inch thickness. Cut into 2-inch squares.
Place 1 teaspoon of poppy seed filling on each square; roll up each square and shape into a crescent. Place on a cookie sheet and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until slightly brown. Remove and dust with powdered sugar.
