SAINTS SILVER WINS USSSA STATE
DES MOINES - The 14U Saints Silver baseball team won the USSSA state title, the first Eastern Iowa team to win the crown in at least 10 years.
Pitchers Braden Stovie, Quinn Schulte and Nate Skalal combined to give up only five runs in the Saints' first five games and the team mercy ruled three of the six opponents on its way to the championship.
The Saints were the only team to have 12 batters every game. Hunter Hargrave smacked a two-run homer in the championship game and Tanner Wright had a team-high six doubles and nine RBIs.
The Saints manufactured more than 60 runs in the three-day tournament.
The Saints entered the tournament with a 17-10 record, won their first two pool games - allowing three total runs - and were seeded second behind Perfect Game Lions. The Saints mowed through teams from Des Moines area and Eastern Iowa, finally finishing off Indianola Storm, 11 -7.
Duane Schulte, Xavier's football coach, was in his first year coaching Saints Silver baseball team.
