David Sands, 74, of Maquoketa, formerly of Central City, died Wednesday, May 6, 2015, at Crestridge Care Center in Maquoketa. Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 11, at United Church of Christ in Central City, by the Rev. Vicki Engelmann. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 10, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City.
Survivors include his son, Danny Sands of Hopkinton; stepdaughter, Tery Reed of California; granddaughter, Danielle Felix; brother, Keith (Christine) Sands of Cedar Rapids; sister, Mardell (Brian) Schultz of Missouri; two nieces, Elizabeth and Kelly; nephew, Will; and special friend, Dick Timms.
Dave was born Aug. 16, 1940, in Central City, the son of Delmar and Evalena (Palmer) Sands. He married Lorraine Wells in 1961; they were later divorced. He then married Rose Reed in 1969; they divorced in 1975. Dave then married Wendy Hearn and she preceded him in death in 2003.
Dave loved being outdoors and earned the title of Eagle Scout as a young man. In his early years, he was an avid fisherman, hunter, and later added golfing and gardening to his interests.
The life of a salesman suited Dave well, from an independent dealer for Harvest Store Silos, then new and used vehicles for Schoons in Anamosa.
He was a devoted caregiver to his mother for several years. The Hawkeye athletics teams provided good entertainment and some special trips for Dave and his friends and family.
