MAURICE (MAURY) E. BARNES

Maurice (Maury) E. Barnes, 95, died peacefully

on Friday, June 15, at his Burnsville, Minn., home of three years. Maury was a

58-year resident of Marion.

A memorial service conducted by the Rev. Mike Morgan of First United Methodist Church will be

held at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service

in Marion on Friday, June 29, at 11 a.m., followed by a luncheon. A private inurnment will be held at Oak Shade Cemetery.

Maury was an Iowa farm boy born on Dec. 2, 1922, in Union, Iowa, to Bruce and Burma (Dillon) Barnes. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942 and served stateside until 1946. A proud World War II veteran, he was an Electronic Technician's Mate, Second Class. He finished his tour of duty installing and managing Coast Guard Unit 414 Radar Beacon Station at Point Loma, Calif.

On May 27, 1954, Maury married Vivian Hilleary. They moved to Marion in 1957 where they raised their two daughters. Maury was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served in several leadership and volunteer roles. In addition, he was a 70-year Mason, a member of Trojan Lodge 548 and a District Lecturer until age 85.

For 25 years, Maury was employed at the Altorfer Machinery Co. in Cedar Rapids. Following his retirement, he remained active by building homes with Habitat for Humanity, assisting in the renovation of the Marion Heritage Center, visiting church members in the hospital and continuing to live a life that reflected his faith and love for family and friends.

Maury was an avid Cubs fan and remembered listening to the 1932 World Series on a Majestic Radio as the team was defeated in four games. To his delight, he lived to see the Cubs win the 2016 World Series!

He is survived by daughters, Gwen (Robert Karol) of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Jennifer (Mark Reinhardt) of Eagan, Minn.; granddaughters, Meredith (Ryan Pecinovsky) of Cedar Falls and Hilleary of Madison, Wis.; brother, Murwin Barnes of Clive; and many nieces and nephews.

Maury was preceded in death by wife, Vivian; his parents; stepmother, Dora Fairchild Barnes; and brother, Monty Ray.
