Smock, Samuel G. 'Sam'

Samuel G. “Sam” Smock, 59, of Independence, Iowa, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at the Buchanan County Health Center, Independence, following a long illness with cancer.

Sam was born on Nov. 12, 1953, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Francis D. and Dorcas A. (Chittenden) Smock. He graduated with the class of 1973 from Independence High School, Independence. He was married to Cindy Sherrets and to this marriage two children were born. On June 1, 1991, he was united into marriage to Sharon D. Lyon. The couple made their home near Independence. He was employed with the John Deere Company in Waterloo, Iowa, for 30 years prior to his retirement.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, serving on the board of trustees, and a member of the UAW Local 838 in Waterloo, Iowa.

Sam is survived by his wife, Sharon; two children, Amy Pauls, Manchester, Iowa, and Jeremy Smock, Aurora, Iowa; two grandchildren, Alex and Kaitlin Pauls; three brothers, David “Mike” (Sandi) Smock, and Fred (Terri) Smock, all of Independence, Iowa, and Jeff (Justine Straw) Smock, Manchester, Iowa; six sisters, Judy Wyant, Independence, Iowa, Karen (Steve) Wood, Cody, Wyo., Jan (Abe) Miller, Brighton, Iowa, Sandy (Rick) Henderson, Meriden, Iowa, Lori Thompson, Manchester, Iowa, and Jennie (Tim) Hewlett, San Antonio, Texas; and a sister-in-law, Delores Smock, Independence, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Ernie Smock.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, Independence, with Dr. David Larson officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, Iowa, and from 9 a.m. until services Tuesday at the church.
