Clayton Duane Patterson, 90, of Swisher, formerly of Solon, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2017, at the Mercy Hospice Unit at Mercy Iowa City. Celebration of life services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, at Shueyville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Craig Peters presiding. Full military rites will be conducted by the Solon American Legion Post 460. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW. A private family inurnment will be at a later date in Oakland Cemetery in Solon. Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre is caring for Clayton and his family.
Clayton was born April 14, 1926, in Muscatine, the son of Earl and Arizona (Fuller) Patterson. He graduated from Muscatine High School, Class of 1947. Clayton served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. Clayton was united in marriage to Myrle Schafer on Oct. 29, 1950, in Muscatine.
He worked for over 32 years with Northwestern Bell, until retiring in 1984. Following, he owned and operated Clayt's Telephone Service for many years. He was proud to work with the Hawkeye football team for 27 seasons, supplying team communications. He enjoyed golfing, going dancing, living on and enjoying lake activities, telling a good joke, and most of all, spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and attending their sport activities. Clayton was active in his church, community and helped many people. He was a current member of the Solon American Legion Post 460 and Shueyville United Methodist Church. He will be greatly missed by many.
Clayton is survived by his wife, Myrle "Myrt" Patterson; two grandchildren, Brady and Calli Werner of Williamsburg; a brother-in-law, Richard Schafer of Cedar Rapids; sisters-in-law, Dory Schafer of Illinois and Geraldine Schafer of Cedar Rapids; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Cari Patterson-Werner; and his siblings, Fern Edwards, Thera Mae Shields and Warren Patterson.
