Claude A. Worden, 90, of Cedar Rapids, formerly a longtime resident of Royal Oak, Mich., died Monday, Feb. 19, 2018, in the Hiawatha Care Center. Funeral Mass:
11 a.m. Friday at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, where a visitation will begin at 10 a.m. The inurnment will be at the Oakland Cemetery in Manchester, Iowa, on April 24, when all the family members are home. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Claude was born Oct. 8, 1927, in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada, the son of Wilfred and Maude (Roberts) Worden. Claude and his older brother, Joseph, were abandoned as very young children and placed in an orphanage in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. When they were in junior high school, they were brought to Detroit to live with their aunt and uncle on the Worden side of the family. Claude became a United States citizen in 1949. He enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired as a chief warrant officer from the military in 1987 after committing to a full active career. He was a member of the Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit and an avid sailor who was the navigator for the Mackinac Race on the Great Lakes numerous times. Claude also loved to travel around the world in his retirement years.
Survivors include his nieces and nephews, Joseph (Jay) Worden of Bolingbrook, Ill., Jon (Karen) Worden of Manchester, Iowa, James (Mick) Worden of Commerce City, Colo., Richard (Laurel) Worden of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, David Worden of Commerce City, Colo., Eric (Sandy) Worden of Aurora, Colo., and Erin Worden of Marion, Iowa; his great-nieces and -nephews, Angie Schmitz of Manchester, Iowa, Anthony Worden and Joseph Worden, both of Iowa City, Iowa; and his great-great-nieces; Isabelle and Avery Schmitz of Manchester, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Patricia Worden Sutton; and his Worden family aunts and uncles in the Detroit area.
