Cedar Rapids
Donald L. Stonebraker, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, March 26, 2018, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Per Don's request, there will be no services.
Survivors include his wife, Wanelle; a son, Kelly (Deborah) of Chicago; two daughters, Donell (Dave) Lloyd of Cedar Rapids and Geri (Troy) Albrecht of Marion; and a sister, Carol Ann (Marion) Cowling of West Des Moines. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Erica, Shelby, Phoebe, Hannah, Jonah and Hollis; and a great-grandson, Camden.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Don was born Dec. 22, 1932, in Corydon, the son of Lee and Bernice Rockhold Stonebraker. He graduated from the Iowa State Teachers College and received his master's degree in education from the University of Iowa. Don was an elementary principal at several schools in the Cedar Rapids school district, retiring after more than 30 years of service.
Don was a member of the Optimist Club, the N.E.A., several bridge clubs, as well as having proudly served in the Army. Wanelle and Don opened their home and hearts as foster parents to many children for over 20 years.
He enjoyed travel, playing bridge, his many dogs, especially Val, going to the theater, and loved the time spent with his many friends, colleagues and beloved family. Don will forever be remembered as an example to his students and family as a man of integrity and honor.
