Vote no for new Independence school
The Gazette Opinion Staff

On Sept. 13, we will have another bond issue vote to build a new high school in Independence. After five failed votes, they are still trying to ram it down our throats. The school board and the people for the new school will tell us anything to get a “yes” vote and then do what they want.
They told us the one-cent local sales tax money was for upkeep and repairs. They want to borrow against it for the new high school.
They are letting our high school fall down. The gym floor has been a disgrace for three years. They told us when they closed Rowley their problems would be over. That didn't work.
They told us the high school wasn't fit for a dog, then they put seventh- and eighth-graders in with the high school while selling a good building for a fraction of what it would cost to replace because it was on the wrong side of town.
There are no jobs here and I know people who told me they have left because of the high taxes. People who are struggling to make it or living on a fixed income don't need higher property taxes.
Also the people from Des Moines and other places around the state who think we should build a new high school should come back and help us pay for it.
I urge a “no” vote on Sept. 13. A new building won't make the students any smarter.
