Fobes, Albert Glen
Albert Glen Fobes, 96, of Waverly, Iowa, and formerly of Edgewood, Iowa, died Saturday, June 2, 2012, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.
Glen was born Dec. 19, 1915, on a farm near Volga, Iowa, the son of Albert C. and Elsie B. (Hold) Fobes. He attended school in Fayette and graduated from Fayette High School in 1933. Glen then entered Upper Iowa University in Fayette and graduated with a B.A. in math and music in 1937. While in college he was active in the music program and played football. After graduating he taught in Greely, Iowa, from 1937 to 1942. On Dec. 31, 1940, Glen was united in marriage to Irma Hunt in Manchester, Iowa. In 1942, Glen enlisted in the Reserve Corps, and in June of 1943 he was inducted into the United States Army. He had his basic training at Camp Koehler near Sacramento, Calif. In the fall of 1943, he went to Hawaii where he spent his service years. Glen served in the Signal Corps and was in cryptographic work in the message center there. In January of 1946, he was discharged and he returned to Iowa, where Glen and Irma settled in Edgewood and he operated a chicken hatchery and poultry farm. In 1958, Glen became a partner in an insurance agency in Edgewood, bought the agency from his partner in 1973, and sold the business in 1978. In 1988, the couple moved to Waverly to be close to his daughter and her family.
While living in Edgewood he was an active member at the United Methodist Church, where Glen served as the choir director for 30 years. He was a member of Avalon Lodge and the Avalon Chapter of the Eastern Star. Glen served on the Edgewood City Council, and was a member of the Commercial Club and American Legion. While living in Waverly, Glen spent his time golfing, playing bridge, and belonged to Trinity United Methodist Church and the Walk and Talk Club. Glen's greatest passion, though, was spending time with his children and grandchildren as well as following Iowa sports and his beloved Cubs.
Glen's memory is honored by his two children, Steve (Penny) Fobes of Hilton Head, S.C., and Jean (Jerry) Rochford of New Hampton, Iowa; three grandsons, Jerry J. Rochford (J.J.) of Guttenberg, Iowa, James Rochford of Edgewood, Iowa, and Joel (Andrea) Rochford of New Hampton, Iowa; and seven great-grandchildren, Payton, Preston, Parker, Pyrce, Conner, Carlee, and Caden Rochford. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Irma.
Glen has been cremated and memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on June 12 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly with Pastor Deborah Wise officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Glen's family and online condolences may be left at .
