Russ, Shirley
Shirley Russ, 79, of Monticello, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, where friends may call after 1 p.m. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The Rev. Al Polito will officiate at the services.
Surviving are a son, John (Sue) Russ, Monticello; three grandchildren, Jane (Eric) Russell, Jeffrey (Erin) Russ and John (Emily) Russ; two great-grandchildren, Cassidy and Michael Russell; two sisters, Mary Lou (Frank) Thompson, Prescott Valley, Ariz., and, Karen (Francis) Frommelt, Dubuque; two brothers, Paul (Elizabeth) Bartels, Monticello, and Larry (Cathy) Bartels, Dubuque; and a special aunt, Pauline Moncrief, Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; a grandson, Joseph; and an infant brother and sister.
Shirley Mae Bartels was born May 26, 1931, in Monticello, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Florence Maxine (Moncrief) Bartels. Shirley graduated from the Monticello Community Schools with the class of 1950. She then worked for the telephone company for several years. Shirley Bartels and John J. Russ were married April 12, 1952, at Elizabethtown, Ky. The couple made their home in Monticello following John's discharge from the service in October 1953. Shirley worked occasionally as a secretary for several business over the years. In 1968, she started working as secretary for Dr. Lyman Perkins and continued to work for Dr. Peter Kennedy when he purchased the practice. She retired in 2001.
Shirley was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She had taught Sunday school for 18 years and was active on the pie committee.
