CEDAR RAPIDS - Surveillance video captured a smash-and-grab burglary at a Cedar Rapids gas station early Wednesday, helping police identify the suspect.
Corey B. McClendon, 38, whose address is unknown, has been charged with third-degree burglary in connection with the incident at Hawkeye Convenience Store, 1581 First Ave. SE. According to a criminal complaint, he used a concrete rock to break out a store window and get inside.
Officers responded around 12:28 a.m. to an alarm at the business, and found the damage but no suspects. Video revealed a suspect rummaging through cabinets. Police said McClendon took cigarettes and flavored cigars from the store.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said officers checked several residences to find McClendon, and found him around two hours later at 1636 A Ave. NE, along with the blue jacket seen in the surveillance video.
McClendon was taken to the Linn County Jail.
