Emil L. Novak, 99, of Amana, passed away Oct. 11, 2015, at Colonial Manor in Amana. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will begin one hour before the service, beginning at 10 a.m. at the chapel. Private family inurnment will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Emil L. Novak was born March 11, 1916, on a farm south of Fairfax, Iowa, the son of Emil C. and Mary (Cuhel) Novak. He attended public schools and Iowa State University. Emil farmed in Linn and Johnson counties for several years. After that he moved to southwest Missouri for several years, where he engaged in ranching and ran a business dealing with bus transportation, news depot, gift shop and restaurant. After returning to Linn County in 1970, Emil spent the rest of his time until retirement working as a Realtor, proudly retiring from the Tommy Tucker agency in 1993.
Emil served three terms as Linn County representative in the Iowa Legislature from 1953 to 1958. Emil was active in the Republican Party and Farm Bureau. He also was a 50-year member of Consistory, Eastern Star, 32nd degree Mason and El Kahir Shrine. Emil was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by Evelyn, his wife of 56 years; son, Maury (Elaine) of Charleston, S.C.; son, Craig (Julie) of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Sharon Veit of Amana; grandchildren, Laura Novak, Pam Staheli, Jeff Domanski, Taleah McNabb, Mallorie Klotzbach, Susan Huff and Joe Veit; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Leona Samek, Cedar Rapids; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil C. and Mary Novak; his first wife, Martha; daughter-in-law, Jane Novak; son-in-law, Ed Veit; brother-in-law, Leo Samek; and Charles and Wayne Schwab.
Memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
