Hanken, Emma Eldreda (Frede)
Emma Elfreda (Frede) Hanken, 93, of Scotch Grove, died Saturday morning, July 31, 2010, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Johns Lutheran Church, rural Monticello, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time. Interment will be in the St. Johns Cemetery. The Rev. Reed Stockman will officiate at the services. Friends may also call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello.

Surviving is her son, Tom (Betty) Streets of Scotch Grove; four granddaughters, Julie (Rick) Thompson of Shellsburg, Jayne (Scott) DeWitte of Lisbon, Amy Streets Littleton of Matthews, N.C., and Janelle (John) Stadtmueller of Monticello; seven great-grandchildren, Nick and Alex Thompson, Hannah DeWitte, Logan Littleton and Kal, Katherine and Kurt Stadtmueller; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louie; her parents; and eight siblings, Lula, George, Alta (Ide), Georgiana (Min), William (Bud), Ferdinand (Ted), Heinrich (Hank) and Sala (Sade).
Emma Elfreda Oltman was born June 24, 1917, at Scotch Grove, Iowa. She was the daughter of George and Gesine Rickels Oltman. Frede received her early education in the Rocky Ridge School and later attended the Monticello Community Schools. Frede married Louie Hanken on Feb. 14, 1935, at St. Johns Lutheran Church. The couple farmed for a year in Clay Township. They farmed for over 50 years in Scotch Grove Township. Frede had an egg route for many years and was the bookkeeper for Louie's auction business.
Louie preceded her in death on June 15, 1987. Frede continued to make her home on the farm until 2006, when she moved to the care center.
Frede was a life long member of St. Johns Lutheran Church. She was baptized on August 5, 1917, and confirmed her faith on April 9, 1933. She was a member of the Ladies Aid as well. Frede also belonged to the Oak Drive Club and served on the Senior Housing Board and many other volunteer services and committees. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Mercy and the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for there excellent care during Frede's illness.
