Demolition of Cooper’s Mill hotel and restaurant continues in Cedar Rapids
CEDAR RAPIDS - Big chunks of the once-popular Cooper's Mill hotel and restaurant began falling this week as demolition of the property at 90 F Ave. NW in Cedar Rapids continued.
Demolition began last Friday with Active Thermal Concepts, an excavation contractor out of Hiawatha, hired by the city of Cedar Rapids for $349,449 to complete the work.
The city acquired the flood-prone building and property for $5.23 million last fall after the September flooding, although a deal was in the works before that time.
The 82-room hotel and restaurant, built in 1972, closed during the flood and never reopened.
The process to take the structure down is a controlled demolition with an excavator as opposed to a wrecking ball or implosion.
