Not every one of Iowa's nonconference games involves North Carolina. Maryland, Baltimore County (That's right, a comma instead of a hyphen) is not North Carolina. Not in basketball, anyway.
You know what comes next. Fun Facts.
1. UMBC is 0-7. Its closest game was a 45-38 loss to Loyola (Md.). The only other winless teams of the 349 in Division I are Central Arkansas, Central Connecticut State, Delaware, Florida A&M, LIU-Brooklyn and Nicholls State. Central Connecticut State and Delaware are in the Northeast Conference, which has 10 teams. None have a winning record, and they 10 have a combined record of 16-44.
2. The Retrievers have a 12-game losing streak dating to last season. They played at Minnesota on Nov. 22 and lost 69-51. Both teams made exactly 50 percent of their free throws in that game.
3. Through Thursday, Iowa was sixth in the nation in field goal defense at 33.8 percent. It was eighth in the nation in fewest points allowed per possession, 0.81.
4. UMBC's RPI at the end of last season was 333. Through Thursday's games, it was 325th (out of 349 teams) this season.
5. Iowa's Aaron White leads the Big Ten in free throws (51) and free throw attempts (58). White is fourth in the nation in free throws made.
6. UMBC is coming off six straight losing seasons. The last five of those produced only single-digit wins. The program's record since the start of the 2009-10 season is 30-128.
7. The two teams have met just once, a 98-81 Iowa win in Iowa City in 1990. The Hawkeyes led 61-29 at halftime. Acie Earl scored a then-career-high 31 points for Iowa. He had 36 points in a game against Wisconsin two seasons later.
8. The Retrievers have won just two road games since the start of the 2012-13 season.
9. UMBC sophomore guard Rodney Elliott suffered a torn labrum in the Retrievers' first game and will miss the rest of the season. He was the America East Conference Rookie of the Year last season, averaging 15 points. He also led his team in assists.
10. The UMBC men's soccer team won an NCAA tournament quarterfinal at Creighton Friday night to advance to next week's College Cup (final four) in Cary, N.C.
11. The Retrievers name comes from Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, the state dog of Maryland. Iowa does not have an official state dog.
12. Under the leadership of 22-year school president Freeman Hrabowski, the school has become an acclaimed honors university. Hrabowski was profiled in this '60 Minutes” piece.
13. 'True Grit” is UMBC's mascot. True Grit's is a favorite dining destination on the university's campus.
