Hold elected officials to a higher standard
The Gazette Opinion Staff

Every American should be outraged at their elected officials, regardless of political party. Do we have any expectations or moral standards from these people anymore?
Democrat Anthony Weiner, who “tweeted” naked photos of his private parts last year, is now considering a run for New York City mayor, and seems to have no qualms about his past behavior. Republican Mark Sanford, who infamously “hiked the Appalachian Trail” or rather “ran off with his mistress to Argentina,” was recently re-elected to Congress on May 7.
How many times has U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder been caught lying (“Fast and Furious,” Associated Press, Fox emails)?
The average American citizen is actually held to a higher standard than the officials who have sought to run an entire city or country. Let's say you posted naked photos of yourself from work, lied at work, or didn't show up for a week for work. The odds are you would be fired. All the “I didn't know,” “I'm sorry” or “I have a problem” would not save you.
Not so with our elected officials. Both parties have leaders who are selling us down the river to China, incurring more and more debt that will cripple our children, all because they lack the character to tell Americans that the jig is up.
It is an insult to all Americans that our elected officials will say anything to keep their jobs. But we keep letting them get away with it.
