MOUNT VERNON - When you're looking for a new boys' basketball coach, it's never a bad thing to hire someone who has won a state championship. Or rehire, in this case.
Mount Vernon Athletics Director Matt Thede said Tuesday afternoon that Ed Timm will again lead the program. Timm, 52, compiled a 108-60 record in seven seasons at the school, including a Class 2A state championship in 2012.
He stepped down following the 2012-13 season. Timm replaces Wes Bruns, who announced his resignation last month.
'I was sad to see Wes leave,” Timm said. 'My wife has always known I would coach again eventually. It seemed like everything lined up at the right time. I'm excited about it. Mount Vernon is a great place.”
Timm's hiring was approved by the MV school board Monday night. He said he stepped away from the program in order to spend more time with his family, including watching oldest son, Jake, play at Coe College.
Jake Timm will be a senior this coming season. Youngest son, Joe, is a junior at Mount Vernon but does not play basketball.
'We are excited to have a person who combines great relationships with basketball knowledge,” Thede said. 'It is a great combination.”
Timm, who teaches at MV, also has been a head coach at Tipton and West Liberty. He coached at Cornell College from 1996 to 2004.
Mount Vernon should be a very good team this coming season. The Mustangs return their top three scorers from a 2014-15 club that lost a 3A substate final to Cedar Rapids Xavier.
It's expected Mount Vernon will drop to 2A for 2015-16.
'To be very honest, I haven't seen them play the last two years,” Timm said. 'Obviously, Wes and I talked a lot. I just didn't want to be a distraction.”
