CEDAR RAPIDS — A hearing date has been set has been set in the case of a Cedar Rapids school district employee accused of a sexual relationship with a student.
Mary Elizabeth Haglin, 24, of Cedar Rapids made her first appearance Saturday morning in Linn County Court and formerly was charged with sexual exploitation. She was released from the Linn County Jail a few hours later.
A hearing date was set for Aug. 12; the arraignment date was scheduled for Sept. 1.
Haglin was arrested Friday by the Linn County Sheriff's Office on charges of sexual exploitation made by a school employee within the Cedar Rapids school district. The criminal complaint states while Haglin was a substitute teacher at Washington, she had a sexual relationship with a student between Jan. 1 and May 17.
Haglin was ordered to have no contact with the minor, with whom she is alleged to have had a sexual relationship.
If convicted, Haglin faces being on the sex offender registry for 10 years and up to two years jail time.
Haglin had worked at other schools in the school district, including Taylor Elementary, Roosevelt Middle School and Kennedy High.
Because she is accused of sexual conduct with a student, Haglin's license could also be revoked before conviction according to Iowa Administrative Code.
