Last Friday, the city of Minneapolis agreed to pay $165,000 to settle a federal lawsuit filed by seven people who were arrested in 2006 after they dressed up as zombies, with wires sticking out of their backpacks.
Today, anarchist news agency Infoshop News reports that
Members of the Zombie 7 have pledged at least $4,000 of their settlement to the legal defense of the RNC 8 and Scott DeMuth, another Minneapolis activist facing a politically-motivated conspiracy trial this fall.
Scott DeMuth faces federal charges of Force, Violence, and Threats Involving Animal Enterprises-Conspiracy in connection with a 2004 University of Iowa animal lab break-in.
Activists claiming affiliation with the Animal Liberation Front said they were responsible for the UI incident, which damaged equipment and released more than 400 rodents used in psychology experiments.
According to a blog in support of DeMuth and Carrie Feldman, after the pretrial conference for DeMuth in Davenport on Monday while at a "Conspiracy Tour" event in Rock Island, Ill., Carrie Feldman was subpoenaed to testify at DeMuth's trial. The Conspiracy Tour also had a scheduled stop in Iowa City at the Iowa City Public Library on Aug. 24.
Feldman and DeMuth were jailed for contempt in November after refusing to testify before a grand jury. DeMuth was released on bond in late November. Feldman was released from jail in March.
DeMuth's trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 13.
