Mount Vernon man dies after crash on residential street

A Mount Vernon man has died, six days after he crashed his car on a residential street.
Wallace F. Johnson, 82, died Tuesday at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids from injuries suffered in the crash, according to an obituary sent to The Gazette. Police said it was unknown if the crash was caused by a medical issue or if Johnson inadvertently pushed on the accelerator.
Police said Johnson was northbound around 10 a.m. on July 6 when his car jumped the curb and hit a minivan parked in a driveway at 606 Third Ave. SW. Johnson's vehicle then struck a large tree and bounced back about 30 yards into the street, according to the police report.
Johnson's car was totaled, and about $4,000 in damage was done to the van, police estimated.
Johnson lived just two doors down from the residence where he crashed. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janice, according to the obituary.
Wallace Johnson died Tuesday, six days after an accident near his home. He was 82.
