Eldon H. Von Ahsen, 92, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following an extended illness. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall, with the Rev. Steven Rempfer officiating. Interment will be at St. John Cemetery near Newhall. Friends may call at the church from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
A memorial fund has been established.
Eldon was born May 22, 1923, in Williamsburg to Otto and Anna (Hudepohl) Von Ahsen. He was raised on a farm near Williams-burg. On Aug. 8, 1946, he was united in marriage to Helen Smith at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Williamsburg. In 1968, the couple moved to Newhall, where he farmed the rest of his life.
Eldon was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall.
He is survived by his wife, Helen of Newhall; his son, Dennis (Pinky) Von Ahsen of Newhall; his grandsons, Nick (Angie) Von Ahsen and Jeff Von Ahsen, both of Atkins; his great-grandchildren, Will, Emma and Owen; his sisters, Lorena Joseph of Columbus, Neb., and Laverna Oakes of Huntington Beach, Calif.; his sisters-in-law, Esther Von Ahsen of Keystone and Darlene Von Ahsen of Amana; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Sandra Kay Von Ahsen, in 2012; his brother, Mervin; and his brothers-in-law, Jerry Joseph, Nolan Oakes and Erwin Von Ahsen.
Special thanks to Pastor Steven Rempfer and Holly Bierschenk for their care and support. Also thanks to the staff at Keystone Care Center, where he resided the past eight months, and to the staff of St. Luke's Hospital.
