Wagner, Clarence 'Cal'
Clarence “Cal” Wagner, 86, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, at All Saints Catholic Church, located at 720 29th St. SE, with Father David O'Connor presiding. Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW, where there will be a 4:30 p.m. vigil. Visitation also will be for an hour before services Monday at the church. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
Cal was born Feb. 17, 1925, in Dubuque, the son of Floyd and Esther (Koppes) Wagner. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in May 1943. Cal proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean conflict. Cal attended Loras College and was a Dubuque County Deputy Sheriff during this time. On May 19, 1948, Cal began his duties with the Iowa State Patrol - badge no. 217, retiring on Sept. 1, 1982. He met Marge at the Linn County Courthouse during a driving test he was conducting. Cal married Marguerite Vomacka on Nov. 24, 1949, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. In 1962, he helped establish and build the first cottage at the Jerry Rabiner Memorial Boys Ranch in Fort Dodge. He was a member of the Iowa State Troopers Association, Iowa State Policemens Association, Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police, National Sheriffs Association, American Legion Post 298 of Marion, USS Hogatt Bay Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 788, the Holy Name Society, and All Saints Catholic Church since 1951.
Cal is survived by his wife, Marge; a daughter, Karen Wagner of Piedmont, S.D.; sisters, Madonna O'Brien of Dubuque and Rosemary Hudson of Coopersville, Mich.; a brother, Paul Wagner of Dubuque; as well numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
Memorials may be directed to the Jerry Rabiner Memorial Boys Ranch in Fort Dodge.
