A former Salvation Army thrift store in Marion has been purchased for renovation to become a Dollar Tree location late this year.
GLD Commercial in Cedar Rapids acquired the building at 2504 Seventh Ave. in Marion's Central Corridor district.
Aspect Architecture of Cedar Rapids is designing the building plans. Dave Drown of GLD Commercial values the project at $2 million.
The Salvation Army store closed May 31.
Dollar Tree of Chesapeake, Va., operates about 14,000 discount stores in the United States and Canada.
The Marion store will be the company's fifth location in the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City area.
The Dollar Tree project is GLD Commercial's second major investment in Marion. The company's principals - Drown, Adam Gibbs and Jim Lamb - are investors with Kinseth Hospitality of North Liberty and other local residents in the $12.4 million TownPlace Suites by Marriott project.
That 88-room hotel at 2823 Seventh Ave. is scheduled for completion in the fall of this year.
