Forty-one years ago, on April 26, 1968, Cedar Rapids Jefferson senior Doug Lane set a high school shot put record at the Drake Relays. He threw 67 feet, 2 1/2 inches, and then announced he would be attending college at Southern Cal ... if not Kansas State.
Lane was a three-time high school all-American in the shot put and set the Iowa state record with a throw of 70-feet, 11 1/2-inches as a senior in 1968, a record that still stands.
He attended Kansas State originally, then transferred to USC. He was named an NCAA All-American in 1971 and '72. Lane won the NCAA indoor championship as a senior in '72 after throwing the 16-pound ball 66-11 1/4, a school record that stood until 2007.
He now lives in Malibu, Calif.
