Letter: Ped Mall not ideal site for solar energy tree

Apr. 1, 2016 1:00 am
To the many folks who have responded enthusiastically to our proposal for a solar energy tree, thank you. Unfortunately, a recent analysis shows that because of nearby high rise buildings, there is not enough sunlight on the Ped Mall during the optimum times of day to power such a tree.
While we are disappointed, we are not discouraged. We are determined to bring this symbol of Iowa City sustainability efforts to a prominent place in the community. Suggestions for possible sites are welcome. We will consider any and all submitted. In the meantime, seek out alternative energy solutions in your own lives: wind, solar, water. We must leave fossil fuels in the ground.
Stay tuned for further information as we explore other site options.
