Ramos kicks off Hawkeye wrestle-offs with win

Red-shirt freshman Tony Ramos earned the first win of the University of Iowa wrestle-offs to determine the starting lineup for the 2010-11 season.
Ramos, who went 13-0 last season, notched a 20-4 technical fall over Charlie Joseph at 133 pounds. It was the only wrestle-off held Thursday. Contests continue Friday at 4:30 p.m. and conclude with matches at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Some of the highlight matches for Friday include Ramos taking on former Iowa State national qualifier Tyler Clark, who sat out last season after transferring to Iowa after the 2008-09 season. Red-shirt freshman Derek St. John will face freshman Michael Kelly at 157 pounds. The two wrestled multiple times in high school when St. John was at Iowa City West and Kelly was a member of the Cedar Falls wrestling team.
The winner fo Ramos/Clark will take on Nate Moore, who wrestled some varsity last year while NCAA runner-up Dan Dennis was out due to an ankle injury. The Kelly/St. John winner will face the winner between Matt Ballweg and Nick Moore. Nick Moore, a freshman and younger brother of Nate Moore, was teammates with St. John at Iowa City West.

RAMOS POSTS FIRST WRESTLE-OFF WIN
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Redshirt freshman Tony Ramos recorded the first win of Iowa's annual wrestle-offs Thursday at the UI Field House practice gym. Ramos, a native of Carol Stream, IL, posted a 20-4 win over freshman Charlie Joseph in 6:47 at 133 pounds. It was the only bout contested in Thursday's first round. The Hawkeyes will hold 11 bouts Friday at 4:30 p.m. and 11 bouts Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the UI Field House practice gym. Results will be posted on hawkeyesports.com after the matches.
Ramos scored three takedowns in the first period, building a 16-4 lead going into the third period. A takedown and two nearfall points in the third period scored him the match-ending technical fall.
The defending NCAA and Big Ten champion Hawkeyes will open the 2010-11 season Nov. 19 with the third-annual Iowa City Duals at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes will face Iowa Central at 4 p.m. and Coe College at 6 p.m.
Wrestling season tickets can be ordered from the UI Athletics Ticket Office, at (319) 335-9323, or online at hawkeyesports.com. Tickets are $67 for members of the public and $55 for UI faculty and staff. Single meet prices are $10 for adults and $5 for youth, if purchased in advance, for the Iowa City Duals, Michigan State, Southern Illinois Edwardsville, Indiana and Michigan duals. The price is $13 for adults, $7 for youth and $2 for children ages five and under for the Iowa State and Ohio State duals. The day of the meet tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for youth for the Iowa City Duals, Michigan State, Southern Illinois Edwardsville, Indiana and Michigan duals, and $15 for adults, $8 for youth and $2 for children ages five and under for the Iowa State and Ohio State duals.
