Eastern Iowans pray for earthquake victims

Following the earthquake and tsunami, groups across the globe start rescue, relief, and recovery efforts. Those efforts came in the form of prayer here in Cedar Rapids Sunday morning. The Cedar Rapids Zen Center gave a special prayer for those affected by the natural disasters.

Now that much of Japan is a land in ruin after being devastated by an 8.9 magnitude earthquake and a tsunami destroying everything in its path.

“Just a lot of questions wondering what was really going on over there,” said Buddhist Eugenia Vavra.

What's happening in Japan is affecting people back here in Eastern Iowa.

“We especially pray to all who died who were injured and lost homes and loved ones,” said Cedar Rapids Zen Center Resident Teacher Zyko Redding.

A handful of Buddhists filled the Cedar Rapids Zen Center to offer their well wishes to a higher power. Resident Teacher Zyko Redding says the natural disasters are a message.

“Take care of our planet, being aware of what we can do,” said Redding.

So far away from Japan and yet still so connected. Buddhist Eugenia Vavra says now is the time to show compassion.

“Whether they're overseas or across the street, I think each of us can do what we can to help one another,” said Vavra.

Vavra says there are things we can all do like praying, offering donations to world organizations, or volunteering your time to people who need it.

“Be strong and know that the world is with you,” said Vavra.
