The three most stolen vehicles in Iowa in 2016 were all pickups, according to a report issued earlier this month.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) issued its annual 'Hot Wheels Report” July 12, identifying the 10 most stolen vehicles, throughout the United States as well as a state-by-state breakdown. The report examines data submitted by law enforcement agencies to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) to compile the lists.
Nationwide, the Honda Accord and Honda Civic were the most stolen vehicles, with 50,427 Accords and 49,547 Civics reported stolen in 2016. Of those, the 1997 Accord and 1998 Civic were the most stolen by model year. Those model years were manufacturered before 'smart key” technology was developed, and the theft rate for 'smart key” vehicles has dropped precipitiously, according to an NICB news release.
'Technology is working, but complacency can defeat it,” the NICB said in their release. 'While thefts are down dramatically since their all-time high in 1992, thousands of vehicles continue to be stolen each year because owners leave their keys or fobs in the vehicles and that invites theft.”
