McGarry, John L. 'Jack'

John L. “Jack” McGarry, 50, of Delmar, died Thursday evening, April 14, 2011, at home. The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, from 2 until 7 p.m. Sunday, April 17, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church. The Rev. Father Paul Connolly will preside, with burial at St. Patrick Cemetery, Villa Nova.

Pallbearers will be Todd Westphal, Florian Steffen, Robert Shearer, Don Kunde, Scott Collins and Frank McGlynn.

John Leo McGarry was born June 22, 1960, in Davenport, to Leon and Marianne (Wolfe) McGarry. He graduated from DeWitt Central High School in 1979 and Iowa State University in 1983. For the last 11 years, Jack was a member of the Maquoketa State Bank team as a vice president/Ag loan officer. He enjoyed working with Eastern Iowa farmers. Before that, Jack was a nutritionist and district sales manager for Master Mix Feeds. There he worked with feed dealers and livestock producers throughout Iowa.

Beyond Jack's “day job,” his true passion was his family and agriculture, where he was a lifelong farmer in partnership with his dad and brother. He also enjoyed restoring old farm tractors, most specifically a 1926 Reo Speed Wagon which was originally purchased by his paternal grandfather and great-uncle. He was a member of the Delmar Lions Club and the Maquoketa Optimist Club.

He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his loving wife, Wendy (Collins), whom he married Sept. 1, 2001; his parents, Leon and Marianne McGarry, DeWitt; children, Jessica (fiance Joe Archer) O'Donnell, Park View, and Timothy (Alicia) O'Donnell, Corpus Christi, Texas; siblings, Maureen (Roger) Kinkor, West Des Moines, Ann (Greg) Decker, Kansas City, Mo., Sheila (Joel) Dentlinger, Arcadia, Lisa (Steve) Ash, West Des Moines, Leo (Jennifer) McGarry, DeWitt, and Erin (fiance Scott Hardison) McGarry, Davenport; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Jack in death were a sister, Coleen; a brother, Leon Joseph at birth; and his grandparents.
