WILLIAM MUND
Cedar Rapids
William Mund, 85, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Dec. 13, 2018, of kidney failure at the Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha, Iowa. He was born May 28, 1933, in Elgin, N.D., to William H. and Emma K. Mund.
Bill grew up in North Dakota and graduated from Leith High School. Upon graduating from high school, Bill married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Bentz. He then attended Dickinson State College, where he lettered in football and was later inducted into the Hall of Fame. Bill proudly served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. During his service, he was a paratrooper (earning $50 per jump) as many of his friends will attest to. Bill held several interesting jobs, such as a coal miner, milkman, farmer and policeman. However, Bill's primary career was spent with Nash Finch Co. as a store manager and warehouse superintendent, retiring in 1995 after 28 years of service.
He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church for many years. His daughters are very grateful that he gave them unconditional love and taught them the values and characteristics he himself displayed. Bill was an amazing husband, father and grandfather - family always came first to him. He enjoyed sports, especially the Hawkeyes, fishing and traveling.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Ruth; children, Corinne (Khemais) Abdou, Cheryl (Curt) Bock and Candice (Candy) Blake; grandchildren, Amir Abdou, Jordan and Maria Bock and Hunter Blake; and great-grandson, Evan Bock. He was preceded in death by his parents; and grandson, Logan Blake.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home, 4200 First Ave. NE, Cedar Rapids. Services will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2018, at Zion Lutheran Church, 201 First Ave., Hiawatha. Family will meet guests one hour before service time. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Garden Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in William's name may be directed to Linn County Childcare Development, Hospice of Mercy or Zion Lutheran Little Lamb's Preschool.
