Bennett, Shirley M.

Shirley M. Bennett, 81, of Northbrook Manor Care Center, died there Wednesday, May 4, 2011. Memorial services will be held at a later date in Charles City. Inurnment: Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. Iowa Cremation is assisting the family.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathi (Hugh) Albrecht of Cedar Rapids and Karen (Paul) Fleming of Fargo, N.D.; two sons, John (Marcia) of St. Cloud, Minn., and Jim (Holly) of Whiteland, Ind.; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer, Amanda, Jaclyn, Ross, Reed, Aaron, Amber, Michael, Claire, Hannah and Sarah; a sister-in-law, Mildred Christian of Kent, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a daughter, Karla.

Shirley was born May 21, 1929, in Missoula, Mont., the daughter of Robert and Alice (Kermeen) Christian, who were immigrants from the Isle of Man. She married John “Jack” Bennett on June 5, 1949, in Spokane, Wash. He died in 1982. Shirley worked for several years at Nash Finch and helped her husband in his veterinary practice.

Shirley was a member of the PEO and Kenwood Park Presbyterian Church. She was a very gracious hostess; enjoyed cooking, sewing and especially the time she spent with her beloved family.
