Hawkeyes in the NFL notes: Jeremiha Hunter tore an Achilles tendon and is on injured reserve, Brett Greenwood is hitting people
Mike Hlas Aug. 3, 2011 11:49 pm
Unhappy news for former Iowa linebacker Jeremiha Hunter, an undrafted free agent who signed with the New Orleans Saints last week.
Hunter tore an Achilles tendon, and there's no swift comeback from that. So he has been placed on injured reserve.
Whodatdish.com (say that quickly three times) reports the Saints had taken a quick liking to Hunter. An excerpt:
He had caught the eye of coaches during the last few days of training camp, making plays all over the field and even nearly picking off a few passes when dropping into coverage.
In other items involving ex-Hawkeyes in the NFL:
Another undrafted free agent, safety Brett Greenwood, apparently has made a good early impression with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
According to Christina Rivers of the Pittsburgh Examiner:
Although he's not great in size (a mere 5'11"), rookie Brett Greenwood from Iowa has shown some of the hardest hits and an ability to get vertical.
The New England Patriots brought in former Iowa defensive end/NFL linebacker Matt Roth for a workout this week.
And that's all the Patriots, the tightest-lipped team in The League, will say.
Roth is a free agent, obviously. He is a 6-year NFL vet and has played in 87 games. He had 86 tackles for the Cleveland Browns last season.
Ricky Stanzi has a long way to go and a short time to get there when it comes to getting ready for his first season with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Robert Gallery hasn't been eligible to being practicing with his new team, the Seattle Seahawks, until today. So he's been acting like an assistant coach.
Tight end Allen Reisner made a leaping grab of a 20-yard pass from fellow rookie Christian Ponder on Wednesday.
Hey, there's not much to go on yet, folks. Fear not. Preseason games start next weekend, and the rookies will be thrown into the fire.
